Workforce Investment Act

The Workforce Investment Act (WIA) may be able to help you get the skills you need to get a good job or start a new career. If you are interested in career training, you may be eligible for an Individual Training Account, referred to as an ITA. The Montgomery County Job & Family Services WIA program aproves all training courses for approved providers. Only courses that train you for a job in a high-demand occupation in Montgomery County are approved.

The Workforce Investment Act (WIA) is a customer choice and occupational demand driven program.  The programs demand driven approach may require shorter and targeted training in some cases and longer term in others, depending on specific skills and credentials identified as necessary by industry. The Workforce Investment Act (WIA) program in NOT an entitlement program, all participants must meet the eligibility and suitability criteria before an Individual Training Account (ITA) for training services can be issued.  All WIA participants do not need formal classroom training to be employable.  Some may need only a few classes of enhancement and others may need only soft skills enhancement. The local WIA process flow is designed to ensure compliance is met prior to approval of  ITA’s for training services.

IF YOU ARE ELIGIBLE FOR TUITION ASSISTANCE FOR TRAINING: The life time maximum amount per individual paid out by Montgomery County Job & Family Services WIA for tuition and other costs associated with the training may be up to $15,000. Any tuition / other costs greater than $15,000 will be the responsibility of the individual.  WIA counselors and the schools may be able to assist you in finding grants, loans and/or scholarships to help you pay for training costs. All customers MUST apply for a Pell Grant to use for schools that are PELL eligible. Attending an Orientation Session is the first step to enrolling. At this session you will learn about available training programs and eligibility requirements.

Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA)

The TAA program helps workers who have lost their jobs as a result of foreign trade. The TAA program offers a variety of benefits and services to eligible workers, including job training, income support, job search and relocation allowances, a tax credit to help pay the costs of health insurance, and a wage supplement to certain reemployed trade-affected workers 50 years of age and older.  Click here for more information.
