Position Summary

Automation Systems & Design is seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Mechanical Assembler / Toolmaker to join our team in Moraine, Ohio. This position is responsible for the assembly, fitting, fabrication, modification, and maintenance of custom automation equipment, tooling, fixtures, jigs, and machine components. The ideal candidate will possess strong mechanical aptitude, blueprint-reading skills, and experience working in a precision manufacturing or machine-building environment.

The Mechanical Assembler / Toolmaker plays a critical role in ensuring the quality, functionality, and reliability of custom automation systems and tooling solutions built for a wide range of industrial applications.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assemble custom automation equipment, machinery, tooling, fixtures, and mechanical systems according to engineering drawings and specifications.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, CAD drawings, assembly instructions, and technical documentation.
  • Fabricate, modify, fit, and repair tooling, fixtures, jigs, dies, machine components, and production equipment.
  • Install and align mechanical components including bearings, shafts, gears, pulleys, conveyors, pneumatic systems, and machine assemblies.
  • Perform precision layout, measuring, drilling, tapping, grinding, and machining operations as required.
  • Utilize hand tools, power tools, precision measuring instruments, and shop equipment safely and effectively.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical issues during assembly and testing and recommend corrective actions.
  • Work closely with engineers, machinists, electricians, and project managers to ensure equipment is built to specifications and project timelines.
  • Assist with machine setup, testing, debugging, and commissioning activities.
  • Conduct quality inspections to verify dimensional accuracy and functionality of completed assemblies.
  • Maintain accurate records of work completed and report any design or manufacturing concerns.
  • Follow all company safety policies, procedures, and OSHA regulations.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Technical school, vocational training, apprenticeship, or equivalent work experience in Toolmaking, Mechanical Assembly, Machining, or a related trade preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in mechanical assembly, toolmaking, machine building, or industrial manufacturing preferred.
  • Strong ability to read and interpret blueprints, assembly drawings, and engineering specifications.
  • Experience with precision measuring instruments such as calipers, micrometers, dial indicators, and height gauges.
  • Knowledge of mechanical systems, machine components, and manufacturing processes.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
  • Excellent attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience building custom automation equipment or special-purpose machinery.
  • Tool and die, mold-making, or precision machining experience.
  • Familiarity with pneumatic and hydraulic systems.
  • Basic welding and fabrication experience.
  • Experience operating manual machine tools such as mills, lathes, grinders, and drill presses.
  • Forklift and overhead crane experience.
  • Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing and Continuous Improvement principles.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, and perform repetitive motions throughout the workday.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds regularly and heavier loads with assistance or lifting equipment.
  • Ability to work in a manufacturing environment with exposure to machinery, noise, dust, and varying temperatures.
  • Manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination required for precision assembly and toolmaking work.
  • Ability to safely operate shop equipment and use required personal protective equipment (PPE).

Transportation Requirements

  • Valid driver’s license preferred.
  • Reliable transportation to and from the Moraine facility.
  • Ability to travel occasionally to customer locations for equipment installation, service, or support as needed.
